The Mei Hua Society Ushered in the "Year of the Rooster" with a Gala to Benefit HCS
Updated: Feb 11, 2018
On Thursday, March 9, 2017, the Mei Hua Society hosted their annual gala celebration to usher in "The Year of the Rooster, in the lunar calendar 4715" to benefit HCS at Peking Duck House in midtown. The festive evening was filled with entertainment, a silent auction, raffle drawing, lion dancing and a great Peking Duck dinner!!! HCS' senior choir provided a special musical performance to the guest singing "You Raise me Up" and a Chinese song about friendship.
Organized in 2006, the Mei Hua Society explores Chinese culture and support worthy organizations in NY Metropolitan area that promote Asian culture or offer services benefiting the Asian community.
Prior to selecting HCS to support, the Mei Hua Society members made a personal visit to HCS' senior center to learn more about HCS' programs and services first hand. They met with seniors and were able to observe the many activities the seniors participated in. They also had a chance to talk with seniors, including a 103 year old senior who greeted them with open arms. In addition, the Mei Hua Society also reviewed HCS' annual reports to understand where our financial needs lie and areas where they could possibly help since our Sheepshead Bay senior center in particular did not have a contract with the NYC Dept. for the Aging and needed help with meals and other operational cost.
HCS is thankful to the Mei Hua Society for identifying us as an organization worthy of support for their 2017 Lunar New Year Gala!!! Proceed from the 2017 benefit dinner will go toward supporting a portion of HCS' hot meal program and hiring of a part-time program aide to coordinate program activities and events, help with developing an oral history project, and assist with website maintenance.
