About the Role

The Policy & Advocacy Intern will work closely with and report to the Policy & Advocacy Coordinator to support HCS’s advocacy and public affairs efforts through research, legislative tracking, community outreach, event coordination, and communications strategies. This internship provides hands-on experience in nonprofit advocacy, government relations, public policy, and community engagement, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in these fields.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in researching local, state, and federal policies affecting the community and nonprofit sector.
• Monitor legislative developments and attend relevant public hearings or meetings.
• Assist in planning and coordinating advocacy campaigns, public forums, and community events.
• Support outreach efforts by engaging with elected officials’ offices, community leaders, and partner organizations.
• Research and identify grant opportunities, including civic engagement, policy, and community-based grants, to support HCS’s initiatives.
• Opportunity to attend community meetings and events to learn about coordinated community engagement and local resources.
• Manage and create content for social media to amplify advocacy efforts.
• Provide general administrative support for public affairs and advocacy initiatives.
• Other duties assigned by Center Directors, Division Supervisors, and the Executive Director.

Requirements

  • High School Senior or Undergraduate Student

  • Must be flexible, positive, engaged, responsible, creative and willing to continually learn with the potential and desire to assume increased responsibility.

  • Passion for community service, government relations, and nonprofit advocacy.

  • Good research and analytical skills to support policy research.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience with social media platforms and digital advocacy is a plus.

  • Knowledge of Mandarin or Cantonese is a plus, but not required.


COMPENSATION: Transportation stipend will be provided.
